Unlicensed archaeological monitoring of groundworks associated with the proposed construction of a residential housing development on a c. 1.7 hectare former greenfield site at Ballybeg & Merrymeeting, Rathnew, Co. Wicklow was carried out in July 2023 in line with the recommendations set out in the related planning submission.
Monitored works comprised the stripping of topsoil across the entire site. Topsoil depth varied in depth from 0.1–0.45m, with deposits of refuse and rubble, particularly in the north and north-west portions of the site. The topsoil overlay natural yellow-orange sandy silt with frequent small, angular stones. Some large stones or boulders were also noted. Occasional areas of sandy shale were exposed in the centre of the site.
No archaeological finds, features or deposits were identified during the monitored groundworks.
