Test trenching was carried out at Kilcoole on the 6th of April 2023. A total of three test trenches were excavated to natural ground or to the top of archaeological deposits, whichever were encountered first. One pit which contained burnt mound material was exposed in Trench 1 at a depth of 0.3m BGL. It was sub-rounded and measured 3.3m east to west by 2.4m. A small test pit was excavated at the western end of the pit, and it was +0.3m in depth. It had two visible fills, the lowermost comprised burnt mound material which was a very dark greyish-brown medium sand which contained frequent heat-affected angular sandstone. This fill was visible along the western edge of the pit and was 0.2m in thickness. The uppermost fill comprised a mid-grey silty clay.
