An archaeological test excavation was carried out on behalf of Wexford County Council for two residential dwellings located at No. 15 Bullawn, New Ross, Co. Wexford. The site is located within the historic boundaries of New Ross Town (WX029-013), 50m to the west of the Maiden Gate. A desk-based assessment and partial test excavation was completed by Stafford McLoughlin Archaeology in 2020 (Licence No. 20E0322). The 2020 investigation could not be completed due to the presence of an existing building fronting on to Bullawn. The remains of this building were subsequently removed from site and the test excavation completed in May 2023. The archaeological test excavation was carried out to ascertain the nature and extent of archaeological remains within the northern portion of the development site under and to the rear of the existing structural remains. These results add to the original findings of the 2020 test excavation report.
No archaeological remains were found across the northern portion of the development site. Several features: a ditch, gully and isolated pit were found across the southern portion of the development site associated with several sherds of medieval pottery. These features and finds are likely associated with burgage plots within the historic core of New Ross.
