Archaeological monitoring of site clearance following the demolition of two dwellings took place prior to archaeological test excavation at 30−31 Bride Street, located in Townparks (St Mary’s Parish), Wexford town. The site is located within the Zone of Notification (ZoN) of Wexford Historic Town (RMP WX037-032----) and lies on or near Bride Gate (site of) located along the estimated line of the defensive town wall (RMP WX037-037002-), which is designated a national monument under the National Policy on Town Defences. All works were carried out under ministerial consent (C001218).

No trace of the medieval defensive town wall or Bride gate was revealed in testing, which was reported to have completely collapsed during flooding along Clifford Terrace in the seventeenth century; no archaeological objects, features or deposits were identified during the archaeological works. However, an earlier wall possibly dating to the eighteenth century was exposed in Trench 1, parallel to Clifford Street. This was fully recorded and photographed. Excavation is recommended, subject to approval by the Minister for Housing, Heritage and Local Government.
