An archaeological monitoring programme was carried out on the proposed development site at Saunders Bridge, Ardmore Road, Ballinaderry, Mullingar, Co. Westmeath in 2023. Phase 1 of the works was carried out in 2021. Phase 3 of the works is now going ahead and relates to the construction of 27 houses and associated works.
All topsoil was stripped from the site down to natural subsoil. A total of three features were identified on the site. Two of these features were determined to be 19th-century field boundary ditches that were backfilled with redeposit natural material. The other feature identified was a small sub-circular pit with small amounts of animal bone and flint debitage within the fill.
