Preservation in situ works were carried out under archaeological supervision at Ballybeg, Co. Westmeath on 21 April 2023. The archaeological site comprises a spread of burnt material and underlying paleosol, which were uncovered during testing on the site of a driveway for a proposed dwelling house in June 2022 (2022:181). The driveway was re-designed and a preservation in situ proposal was included in the test excavation report (DDA, July 2022). The subsequent grant of planning included a condition requiring preservation in situ in accordance with the methodology detailed within the testing report. Geotextile sheeting was rolled out on the grass along the entire length of the driveway. The archaeological site was covered with 300mm of fine sand, which was overlain with 200mm of aggregate stone. A full photographic record of the work was undertaken.
