Archaeological testing was carried out for a proposed development located within the grounds of Curraghmore Estate and demesne lands, Co. Waterford. The site is close to the Zones of Notification for two enclosures and a large post-medieval/early modern farming complex. This work followed an archaeological desktop assessment by Ă“rla Scully in 2022, geophysical survey by J.M. Leigh Ltd in 2023 (under Licence 22R0408) and an industrial archaeological survey by Dr Colin Rynne in 2022.
Testing consisted of six machine-excavated linear test trenches. The results revealed a shallow undated pit which contained a charcoal-rich fill that also produced an (undated) encrusted metal object, which was located within a cluster of geophysical ferrous anomalies. In addition, a number of post-medieval linear drainage features, gravel trackways, and an iron metal water pipe were also recorded. Further mitigation works, including excavation, is recommended.
