Archaeological monitoring of groundworks associated with the re-development of the Glove Factory at No. 20 James Street, Tipperary Town, was undertaken as part of granted planning permission. The building is a Protected Structure and is within the zone of archaeological potential for the historic town of Tipperary (TS067-004).
Archaeological monitoring was required for both the demolition and ground disturbance. However a very substantial part of the works had been completed, including all relevant demolition and most of the ground disturbance, by the time an archaeologist was appointed. Limited sub-surface ground works were required to lay waste services across the ground floor of the building to tie into the public mains on James Street.
The excavations for the new services were not deep and were laid predominantly within modern infill which was laid as part of the building works. At the time of monitoring, the site was 350mm below the finished floor level. The trenching extended in the main through modern infill and the underlying natural deposition. No archaeological remains/features were uncovered in the course of the very limited monitoring works.
