Archaeological monitoring was carried out within Friar Street Carpark, Cashel, Co. Tipperary. The groundworks within the scope of the proposed development consisted of the removal of shrubbery along the southwest to northeast boundary wall and the subsequent excavation of a slot trench measuring 11.5m in length by 0.62m with a maximum depth of 0.7m. The topsoil measured 0.48m in thickness and consisted of a loose greyish-brown silty clay with frequent roots and rubbish. Beneath the layer of topsoil, a concrete deposit was reached. The concrete was broken with a toothed bucket and a stone breaker and the trench was excavated for a further 0.2m depth. Beneath the concrete was sand and gravel. No archaeological features, structures or deposits were identified in the slot trench, and no archaeological artefacts were retrieved.
All groundworks associated with the development are now complete and no further action is necessary.
