Archaeological test excavation as preliminary works to the redevelopment of a former hotel site to new town centre car park took place on 14 December 2023.
Two test trenches were mechanically excavated under archaeological supervision within the open space of the site. The trenches achieved depths consistent with the natural underlying subsoil which varied in depth from 0.1m to 0.6m.
Aside from 20th-century cattle remains associated with a previous adjacent butchers, no archaeology was encountered.
