Ballinard to Killenaule Uisce Eireann watermains replacement scheme covers and overall distance of 16.5km. Preceding impact assessment determined five zones of archeological potential that the scheme traverses.
Zone 5 was archaeologically monitored between 25 September and 10 October 2023, with the remaining four zones scheduled for monitoring in 2024.
Zone 5 contains a tower house, TS070-031 and the adjacent enclosure, TS070-032. The L2303 and consequently the route of the scheme traverses through their eastern zones of archaeological potential, in which the route may have been partially built upon the enclosure. Assessment of satellite photography identified that a second possible enclosure is situated on the opposite, eastern side of the road and scheme’s route, directly opposite both the tower house and the enclosure. This zone of archaeological potential is 200m from ITM 625496 636430 to 625526 636238.
The works involved archaeological supervision of a mechanically-excavated open-cut trench, which measured 0.4m in width and 1.2m in depth. No archaeology was encountered.
