Archaeological monitoring of the rejuvenation of parklands and addition of recreational facilities at Tipperary Hills (Murgasty) took place between 27 August and 28 November 2023.
It involved the widening of existing paths as well as the introduction of new facilities such as a football pitch, outdoor gym and dog exercise area. the work also included the insertion of floating stairs and a summit walkway on Murgasty Motte (TS067-002).
While no structural, stratigraphic or in situ archaeology was encountered, the sod level works at the motte revealed a quantity of animal bone, slag waste and a whetstone, which were all mixed with modern beer bottles and beer cans.
As part of the development, soil was imported from off-site from an extended council yard (subject to previous unassociated topsoil stripping and stockpiling) at Kilross, Co. Tipperary (ITM 583092 633363). A rotary disc quernstone was imported onto the site with this material.
