The final phase of archaeological monitoring for the Green and Old Road rejuvenation works took place between 19 and 24 January 2023.
For the most part, the ground works revealed modern strata – road or footpath surfaces within underlying bedding layers, often truncated with deeper service ducts – siting on natural subsoils. A burnt or fire-reddened pit was revealed during road widening on the east side of the Old Road, where the road was broadened into a field. This was found to contain a charcoal-rich fill with a lot of white flecks. Samples were obtained for dating and further analysis, however, the samples too corrupted from modern overlying strata to return any date. The eastern portion of this feature was left in situ as it was not impacted upon.
