Construction groundworks for a single house development in Ballinulty townland, Cullen, Co. Tipperary took place in two phases; the first, in October 2022, for construction of the house and new site entrance, and the second, in September 2023, for the waste water system and garage.
Previous archaeological testing in October 2020 under licence number 20E0559 targeted the results of a geophysical survey of the site. This test excavation revealed three ditches. These were a curvilinear ditch that appears to represent part of the outer circuit of ringfort TS058-033 that stands on the opposite side of the road, secondly an undated ditch that crosses the site from south-east to north-west, and thirdly a post-medieval ditch parallel to the road (excavations entry 2020:274).
Subsequent archaeological monitoring was carried out under extension to licence 20E0559. Monitoring this revealed the upper surface of the undated ditch in the base of foundation trenches for the new house; the ditch was not directly impacted and remains preserved in situ. The ditch potentially associated with the ringfort (TS058-033) was not revealed or impacted during groundworks and no other archaeological material was observed.
