Archaeological monitoring was carried out in advance of expansion works at Ballina Wastewater Treatment Plant, located in the townlands of Roolagh and Ballina. Where present across the site, the topsoil was found to be very thin, measuring between 0.05m and 0.1m in thickness. It overlay subsoil of firm, mid-grey/orange silty clay, measuring 0.15m in thickness. Below this was mid-grey stoney gravel that appeared to represent made ground. In one area of the ESB trench along the east side of the site, a 0.3m-thick firm, mid-grey clay layer overlay a 0.1m-thick firm, dark red/brown peaty layer (C4), likely representing alluvial clay and made ground along the river.
No archaeological features or deposits were exposed, and no finds were recovered.
