Archaeological monitoring of groundworks associated with Uisce Éireann’s Carrigans Rising Main Water Network Programme was carried out on 21 and 22 of August 2023. The groundworks comprised of two sections: the laying of 500m of replacement/new water mains in Rathnakelliga, Carrowcauly or Earlsfield, and Carrigans Upper townlands and the laying of 2,688m of replacement/new water mains in Carrigans Upper townland, Co. Sligo.

The monitoring followed a high-level Combined Cultural Heritage Screening Report prepared for the scheme by Archaeological Management Solutions in October 2022 (McCulloch 2022). The assessment found that the Carrigans Rising Main scheme would transect the Zone of Notification (ZoN) for a Recorded Monument SL033-093--- (ringfort- rath/cashel) and would be in close proximity to the site of the former lodge (ibid., CH02) of Earlsfield House (Record of Protected Structures no. 104/National Inventory of Architectural Heritage no. 32314013).

In order to identify any subsurface archaeological remains or objects that may have potentially existed along the Carrigans Rising Main scheme route, it was proposed to monitor any ground excavation works to be carried out for the construction works located along the southern 232m of the scheme including within the ZoN for Recorded Monument SL033-093.

Nothing of archaeological interest was encountered during monitoring.
