The Easky Cast Iron Scheme in Co. Sligo forms part of a larger nationwide Water Network Programme that is being undertaken by Uisce Éireann. The scheme involved the installation of c.396m of rehabilitated water mains along the existing road (R297). The installation method used was horizontal directional drilling (HDD). The groundworks for the scheme consisted of several access pits (AP), trial holes (TH) and slit trenches.

The monitoring followed a high-level Combined Cultural Heritage Screening Report undertaken for the scheme by Archaeological Management Solutions in December 2022.

The archaeological monitoring was carried out intermittently on 25 and 26 January 2023 and between 14 November 2023 and 30 January 2024. It was carried out in the western section of the scheme 26162514 on CH13 (bridge) across CH01 (Ballybeg River), in the western section of eastern scheme along the Easky Bridge (RPS 184/NIAH 32306007) and in close proximity to SL011-118---- (cross), the graveyard associated with St Anne’s Church of Ireland (RPS 180/NIAH 32306005 and the site of NMI find IA/89/1993), the Easky River (CH07), mill race-site of (CH08) and possible spring-site of (CH10) and in the eastern section of the scheme in the vicinity of CH06 (cemetery) and 20m either side.

Advance Site Investigation was undertaken for the western and on the western section of the eastern scheme. The main construction works were undertaken only on the eastern scheme due to a change, by the client, to the scope of works.

Excavation of five THs and two APs to facilitate the HDD installation method and several slit trenches to facilitate house connections were monitored in order to identify any subsurface archaeological objects, features or deposits that may have been present.

No potential archaeological objects, features and deposits were found during the monitoring of the Easky Cast Iron scheme’s route. The only feature revealed was as small section of a modern cobbled surface opposite Bridge House (RPS 88/NIAH 32306009).
