The proposed development comprises the construction of a footpath and all associated works from Carricknagat to Collooney Co. Sligo, in the townlands of Carricknagat, Bleachgreen, Rinn and Collooney. The objective of the scheme is to create a pedestrian link connecting the two areas. The proposed footpath will be located close to Carricknagat railway bridge and extends south along the R290 to the junction with the old R290 in Collooney village.
There are several recorded monuments in the wider area. The nearest monuments are SL020-200---- Redundant record, SL020-281---- Battlefield and SL020-236---- Bridge. These monuments will not be directly impacted upon either physically or visually by the proposed footpath development.
The site inspection took place on 7 June 2022 for the Archaeological Assessment Report; no finds or features of archaeological significance were noted. The route for the scheme traverses the Zone of Archaeological Notification for these monuments. Therefore, it was recommended that the site be subject to a programme of archaeological monitoring during all groundwork associated with the proposed development.
Archaeological monitoring was conducted in November 2023. No material of an archaeological nature was observed.
