The Ardnure scheme in Co. Roscommon forms part of a larger nationwide Water Network Programme that is being undertaken by Uisce Éireann. The scheme involved the installation of c. 3,079m of new water mains along the existing road carriageway. The groundworks for the scheme consisted of several access pits to facilitate the pipe bursting method located along an existing unnamed road c.3.5km west of Athlone in the townlands of Rooskagh, Curraghaleen, Cloonrollagh, Ardnanure and Newtown in Co. Roscommon.
The monitoring followed a high-level Archaeological and Architectural Heritage Screening Report prepared for the scheme by Archaeological Management Solutions in 2021. The assessment found that the Ardnure scheme will transect the Zones of Notification (ZoNs) of two archaeological sites: a ringfort - cashel (RO051-106001-) within which lies a children’s burial ground (RO051-106002-), located in Curraghaleen townland.
Archaeological monitoring was carried out on 25 and 26 September 2023 of the excavation of two access pits (AP1 and AP2) situated within the ZoNs. The access pits measuring between 3–3.8m by 1m by 1–1.3m in depth were located at the road verge adjacent to a field boundary bank. In both access pits, the 1m high bank comprised of topsoil and stones and overlaid a 0.7–1.1m deep layer of natural subsoil consisting of light yellow or light orange-yellow, gravelly-sandy clay with moderate sub-angular stone inclusions.
No potential archaeological objects, features or deposits were noted during monitoring.
