The proposed development is in Curry townland, which is in the north of Strokestown, Co. Roscommon. The proposed works entails the construction of a single dwelling house together with all ancillary site works and services. The proposed development is in the vicinity of RMP RO017-188001- Ringfort and RO017-188002- Ringfort. Both monuments have no visible upstanding remains but when examined are visible as crop marks or a change in vegetation. The monuments were disturbed in the past having had the upstanding remains removed and the neighbouring outbuildings built on a portion of the ringfort to the east.
Test trenching took place on 21 August 2023. Site conditions were good during the test trenching work, the terrain was gently sloping and easily accessible. The site is sub-triangular in plan and was covered in low grass, with a tree-lined boundary to the west and a wooden fence separating the PDA from the neighbouring property to the east. A small number of constraints were encountered during the programme of testing, including heavy roots from the tree-lined boundary to the west, a water pipe which traverses the site running west-east and two overhead cables which also traverse the site west-east. No archaeological material was uncovered in any of the eight test trenches.
