The Granlahan Community Centre, Co. Roscommon scheme forms part of a larger nationwide Water Network Programme that is being undertaken by Uisce Éireann. The Granlahan scheme involved the installation of 816m of new water mains along existing road (including associated assets, fittings and transfer of service connections). The groundworks for the scheme consisted of a series of exploratory trenches (access pits) associated with the directional drilling installation method located along the unnamed roads. To the west of the scheme, it consisted of an open-cut trench.
Archaeological monitoring was recommended for the open-cut trenching along the section within the Zone of Notification for RO032-007 but a subsequent change to the original plans resulted in trenches (access pits) associated with the directional drilling installation method being excavated at the location mentioned above. The access pits were archaeologically monitored while the section of open-cut trench along the existing roadbed within the Zone of Notification for RO032-006 for the scheme were monitored due to the potential for unrecorded subsurface archaeological remains to be present.
The three trenches (access pits) (AP1–AP3) associated with the directional drilling installation method measured 0.8m x 2.6m approx. and averaged 1.4m in depth. The subsoil within the trenches consisted of a mid-brown silty clay containing occasional small to large sub-angular stones, sealed by 0.3m of modern road surface.
The open-cut trench extended from the west of the unnamed road along the existing western end of the Granlahan scheme intersecting the Zone of Notification of the rath-ringfort (RO032-006). The trench measured 15m x 0.7m and 1m in depth, the underlying subsoil consisted of a mid-brown silty clay containing occasional small to large sub-angular stones, sealed by 0.25m of modern road surface. A ditch measuring 0.9m in width was exposed at the base of the open-cut trench and is likely to be an extension of the field boundary running south-southwest from the south side of the road.
No potential archaeological objects, features or deposits were revealed in any of these trenches.
