Archaeological test-trenching was undertaken at the site of a 20kV substation as part of a proposed solar farm development located in the townland of Ballyduff, Co. Offaly. This programme of testing was undertaken in response to a planning condition. Archaeological investigations previously undertaken for the project include an archaeological assessment carried out by John Cronin and Associates in July 2016.
A total of two test trenches were excavated at the site of the proposed substation to determine if previously unrecorded archaeological remains survived within the footprint. Testing was undertaken on 24 October 2023 by Colum Hardy and Alan Healy of Archaeological Management Solutions. The two parallel trenches were orientated east-northeast/west-southwest and measured 14m in length by 1.8m wide, within an overall area measuring 20m x 15m (300m2).
Nothing of archaeological significance was recorded during testing.
