Archaeological monitoring of exploratory groundworks was undertaken for the Uisce Éireann Water Network Programme (WNP) at Canal Street and Mall Road in the town of Monaghan, Co. Monaghan (WNP Scheme IDs: 26299595 & 26299598).
The scheme involved the installation of c.670m of mains along Glen Road, Mall Road and Canal Street in the town of Monaghan (including associated assets, fittings and transfer of service connections). The scheme also includes the decommissioning of c.5m of existing pipeline, within the existing roadway.
The monitoring followed a high-level Cultural Heritage Screening Assessment (CHSA) prepared by Archaeological Management Solutions in June 2023 (McCulloch 2023). The CHSA did not recommend monitoring; however, subsequent correspondence from the Uisce Éireann Project Archaeologist (UÉPA) advised that a 60m section of the north-east end of the scheme should be subject to monitoring, as this section is close to the Zone of Notification for the historic town of Monaghan (MO009-060). This was agreed in consultation between the UÉPA and Mairead Weaver of the National Monuments Service.
In line with these recommendations, five trial holes were monitored. Three were located on the south side of the road on the path junction, and two were located on the north side on the junction of Canal Street in order to locate the existing main water pipes. An open-cut trench measuring 60 linear metres was also monitored. the monitoring of works was carried out between the 3–7 July and 26 of July.
No potential archaeological objects, features, deposits, or human bones were noted during archaeological monitoring.
