Archaeological monitoring was carried out at Courthouse Carpark, Church Square, Monaghan Town, for the proposed instalment of electric vehicle charger points. The development involved the removal and relocation of a ticket machine, an existing shopping trolley storage bay, a disabled person's parking bay, existing block-paved footpaths and the instalment of electric vehicle charger points, with a proposed trench for ducting from an existing ESB substation to customer metering cabinet and EV charge point.
The concrete was lifted, and the ground excavated below. The groundworks excavated into disturbed ground that had been backfilled with gravel. A wedge-shaped area that measured 3.5m in length by
2-3m in width was excavated to a depth of 0.55m. A ducting trench was excavated from the ESB substation in the courthouse yard, ran eastwards into the car park, and went north, where it met the newly-installed PowerPoint. The trench ranged in depth from 0.65m to 0.75m and had a width that ranged from 0.8m to 1m.
No archaeological features or deposits were exposed, and no finds were recovered. The work is now complete, and no further mitigation is necessary.
