The site at Carlanstown, Kells, Co. Meath, was archaeologically assessed by test trenching which involved the excavation of five test trenches within the site, each measuring 1.8m in width with a total of 272m of linear trenches excavated. The test trenches were excavated to the natural subsoil, which consisted of a mottled orange and grey coloured clay with poorly sorted angular stones and infrequent cobbles. There were also areas of light greyish-brown silty clay with poorly sorted sub-angular stones under 0.01m diameter with infrequent cobble-sized stones.
A feature of archaeological significance, burnt stone spread (C102), was identified in the north portion of Trench 2. An area was stripped to assess this feature's full extent. The burnt stone spread was found to measure 11m north-west by south-east by 10m. The feature appears to have been levelled and ploughed out. There is potential that associated features, such as pits and troughs, might exist under the burnt stone deposit. The features will be directly impacted by the proposed development.
