Test excavation was undertaken on 31 July 2023 in wet, cloudy, conditions. It was proposed to excavate 4 trenches (c.70 linear metres) by mechanical excavator under archaeological supervision. Trenches 1, 2 and 4 were altered due to constraints. Trench 3 could not be excavated. This resulted in a total of 50 linear metres being excavated instead of the proposed 75 linear metres.
Excavation of the trenches revealed good quality garden topsoil varying in depth between 0.6m and 1.5m. The topsoil was overlying natural subsoil of light yellowish-grey silty-clay.
Nothing of archaeological significance was recorded during the test excavation.
