The development works entailed the construction of a new slipway at the existing Lisloughrea Pier on Lough Corrib. The proposed development site has an area of 0.1ha and sits c. 10m above sea level. The works involved removal of a small localised area of lake vegetation within the works area prior to commencing the improvement works; damming of the construction works area within the lake; excavation and removal of the existing degraded concrete slipway; excavation of a quantity of silt from the lakebed within the dammed area to accommodate the new slipway; construction of the new concrete slipway; driving of monopiles into the lakebed in order to facilitate the installation of the floating pontoon; installation of the floating pontoon; and construction of a short walkway and gangway to access the pontoon.
The proposed development is near Lough Corrib and the historic Lisloughrea Pier and associated warehouses (NIAH reg. no. 31312012). There are no recorded monuments within the vicinity of the proposed development site. The lakeside location of the works increased the potential for underwater or lakebed features or artefacts.
Archaeological monitoring took place on 8 February 2023, following a request from for monitoring of all groundworks associated with the slipway development. Monitoring took place throughout the course of the excavation works and no features or deposits of archaeological significance were noted during site clearance and ground works at the slipway development area.
