A programme of archaeological testing and assessment was carried out at a proposed development to the rear of the existing Meissner facility at Drumconlan townland, Castlebar, Co. Mayo. There are no recorded monuments in the immediate vicinity of the subject site. The nearest monument is a Ringfort – rath (MA078-029---) located roughly 450m to the south.
The proposed development comprises the construction of 16,374 square metres combined two- and three-storey administrative office and warehousing facility expansion, comprised of an office building, roof plant area and construction of warehouse, packaging, shipping & receiving areas and associated works.
The stratigraphy exposed was consistent throughout the site and comprised 200-400mm of topsoil and sod overlaying a deposit of rubble over natural subsoil at a depth of between 300-500mm. The site had clearly been excavated in the past as is evident in section faces bordering the site to the west and north. Local informants suggested that significant excavations had occurred ’30 years or so ago’ to facilitate a rear entrance to, and drainage from, the adjacent Baxter’s facility.
Nothing of archaeological significance was noted.
