Archaeological test trenching was undertaken at the site of a proposed mixed-use development within the historic town (MA078-003) of Castlebar, Co Mayo. The site located on Bridge Street was formerly occupied by standing buildings likely 19th or 20th century in date, until their demolition prior to current construction works. Four test trenches were excavated, typically revealing a 19th- and 20th-century fill to a depth of almost 1m; underlying this fill were sterile natural geological deposits truncated by services relating to the former occupation of the site. It was clear that 19th- and 20th- century construction activities had removed the upper horizons of the natural subsoil and any layers of archaeological potential. Nothing of archaeological significance was identified.
