A comprehensive program of pre-development testing was carried out across the area of a proposed residential development at Laghtadawannagh, Ballina, Co. Mayo, just off the Killala Road on the north-western fringes of Ballina.
The site is located on the slope of a ridge rising to the west and is not within the Zone of Notification for any Recorded Monument. The closest monument to the development is the ‘Friars Grave’ burial located 300m north of the development.
Archaeological testing was carried out in order to further investigate and assess the likely archaeological potential of the site prior to the planning proposal for a development consisting of 37 residential units and all ancillary works.
The site covers an area of 4.74 acres; a total of 9 test trenches were excavated covering a total of 1010m. No evidence for any archaeological finds, features or deposits were found during archaeological testing across the site.
