The test excavation of a site in advance of its development in Rinnaseer townland, in the village of Islandeady, County Mayo, was carried out on 19 April 2023.  The project consisted of the construction of a Community Centre. The testing was necessary due to the size of the proposed development site and the scale of the proposed development. It was carried out as part of the planning process.

The proposed development site was located in an area of scrub, much of which was inaccessible with clearances in places. There were no recorded monuments either within or in the immediate vicinity of the proposed development site.

The testing consisted of the excavation of five trenches, located to best cover the area of the proposed development that was accessible. The trenches measured 17.2m, 20.5m, 15.4m, 30.3m and 18.5m long respectively; 1.8-2m wide and 0.3-0.9m deep.

The pre-development testing revealed topsoil and peaty topsoil, above two areas of modern fill and natural subsoils. A water-main, dating to the 1980s, crossed one of the trenches. Only one artefact was recovered during the testing, a modern pottery sherd, which was found in the spoil from one of the test trenches. Nothing of archaeological significance was in evidence.
