Monitoring of groundworks along two sections of the Tooreen-Aghamore Group Water Scheme in County Mayo, was carried out on 3 April 2023. The two sections of the pipeline route were located in the vicinity of two recorded monuments in Mountaincommon townland, south-east of Aghamore village.
The first section of the pipeline route which was monitored was located through a field of pasture, 27m away from a ringfort (RMP No. MA082-024). It measured 76m long, 0.5-0.7m wide and 0.5-0.8m deep. The second section of the pipeline route which was monitored was located along the south-west side of a large field of pasture, 20m from an enclosure (RMP N0. MA081-037). It measured 87m long, 0.6-0.8m wide and 0.4-0.7m deep.
The stratigraphy encountered during the monitoring of groundworks was topsoil above natural subsoils. No artefacts were visible. Nothing of archaeological significance was in evidence.
