The test excavation of a site in advance of its development in Ballyshingadaun townland, just outside The Neale village in County Mayo, was carried out on 24-26 July 2023. The proposed development consisted of the construction of ten houses and associated site works. The testing was necessary due to the size of the site and the scale of the proposed development.
The site was located across two fields of pasture with rock outcrop visible in a small area near the northern end of the larger field. There were no recorded monuments located within or in the immediate vicinity of the site.
The testing consisted of the excavation of eleven test trenches, located to best cover the area of the proposed development that was accessible. The trenches measured 61m, 112m, 120.2m, 120.5m, 85.3m, 20.6m, 30.2m, 29.8m, 20.4m, 49.7m and 52m long respectively; 1.8-2.3m wide and 0.1-0.8m deep.
The pre-development testing revealed topsoil above natural subsoils and bedrock, i.e. natural undisturbed stratigraphy. A small number of modern artefacts were recovered from the topsoil and the spoil. Nothing of archaeological significance was in evidence.
