Given the proximity of the proposed site to an area of archaeological potential around recorded monuments MA 070 091002 and MA 070 092, licensed pre – development testing was required. The proposed development of the football pitch is within the Zone of Archaeological Potential for the recorded monuments listed. The test trenches were excavated as per the licence application and method statement (three extra trenches were excavated in the greenfield area to the east of the site, T 14 was placed along the outskirts of MA 070 092, Fulacht Fiadh). Topsoil varied from 0.35–1m deep in the dry greenfield area. In the lower boggy ground, the depth of the topsoil and infill material was up to 2m. No artefacts or environmental evidence were revealed during the test trenching exercise. Nothing of archaeological significance will be impacted upon by the proposed developments.
