The proposed works entailed the construction of a detached dwelling house, effluent treatment system and percolation area with all necessary site works at Rosserk, Ballina, Co. Mayo. There is a recorded monument within the vicinity of the proposed development area, MA022-079----Cross-inscribed stone. Archaeological testing of the proposed development site was carried out following a further information request set out by the planning section of Mayo County Council. The work was commissioned in order to determine the archaeological potential of the area and to suggest suitable mitigation measures. Testing took place on 5 September 2023. The site consists of one large open field, in use as pastureland. The testing scheme was applied to the footprint of the house, driveway and at the point closest to MA022-079, which is indicated as being across the road and south of the site. A total of 5 linear trenches were excavated by a mechanical excavator under archaeological supervision. No material of archaeological significance was noted during the testing programme. Due to the lack of archaeological material uncovered during test trenching, it is considered that the development will have negligible impact on any archaeological monuments in the vicinity, including the cross-inscribed stone.
