The area under archaeological assessment is located at Ballinlena, Killala, Co. Mayo and the proposed development entails the construction of a glamping centre with all necessary sitework and ancillaries. Testing took place on 26 May 2023. The work was carried out by a mechanical excavator under strict archaeological supervision.
During the programme of archaeological testing 10 linear test trenches were excavated across the entire development site, totalling 335m. All trenches were excavated through the topsoil and sandy subsoil to the underlying natural substrate, which in most of the trenches comprised a yellowish- orange boulder clay with occasional decayed stone and moderate medium to small-sized stones. No archaeological objects, features or deposits were encountered during testing.
