The Park Road and Kiltimagh Road Water Mains Scheme forms part of a larger nationwide Water Network Programme that is being undertaken by Uisce Éireann and involved installing 2,501m of new/replacement mains. The scheme’s route was located along Park Road and Kiltimagh Road in Swinford, Co. Mayo.
Archaeological monitoring was undertaken at site of an enclosure (MA062-079) shown on the first-edition six-inch OS map (1839) adjacent to now-demolished Brabazon House, which is overlain by modern development and intersected by Park Road.
One potential archaeological deposit was identified within the Zone of Notification for the enclosure (537591, 798848 ITM). This deposit had already been truncated by a previous service that had been installed below the required level of the water main. The deposit was situated at the base of the trench at a depth of 1.15m, measured 1.13m wide and 0.15m deep. It consisted of dark greyish-brown silty clay containing a distinct band of charcoal, flecks of charcoal and heat-affected stone.
