Archaeological monitoring was carried out at Donore Road, Drogheda, Co. Louth. It is proposed to install electric vehicle charger points at the existing Donore Road Carpark. The development is planning-exempt and is a part of the EV Faster Project (Site 2). A Cultural Heritage Impact Assessment Screening was prepared by John Cronin and Associates (2023) for the project, with licenced archaeological monitoring recommended for the site.
The archaeological monitoring of a slot trench identified that the site was in an area of made-up ground with disturbances from previous excavations for services present in the soil matrix. The ground monitored consisted of disturbed ground of a dark yellow-brown silty clay with infrequent fragmented red brick inclusions, gravels and rounded and flat stones. This was excavated to a depth of 0.75m and 0.9m. The different levels were recorded due to the presence of exiting services, which necessitated either going under or over the service pipes. This ground had modern gravels mixed in at all levels and there were services below the working level of this project.
No archaeological features or deposits were exposed, and no finds were recovered.
