The assessment of a site at Mell, Drogheda, Co. Louth involved the excavation of seven test trenches, each measuring 1.8m in width with a total of 893m of linear trenches excavated. The test trenches were excavated to the natural subsoil, which consisted of a mottled orange and grey coloured clay with poorly sorted angular stones and infrequent cobbles. There were also areas of light grey/brown silty clay with poorly sorted sub-angular stones under 0.01m diameter with infrequent cobble sized stones. There were three buildings recorded on the first edition OS map (surveyed 1834 – published 1836). These buildings are no longer there or in the same place on the third edition OS (surveyed 1907 - published 1909). None of these buildings were identified in the test trenches and it is likely that they were removed to allow for agricultural activity to take place. No archaeological features or deposits were identified within the excavated trenches. Consequently, no further archaeological work is recommended at this site.
