Archaeological test trenching was carried out on the site at Castletown Road, Dundalk, Co. Louth. A total of 8 trenches were excavated across the footprint of the proposed development. The test trenches were excavated down to a natural that varied between a greyish-orange silty clay with gravel and frequent stones to a grey and orange clay. Modern rubbish, mainly construction rubbish with frequent iron waste, was recorded in Trenches 1, 6, 7 and 8, allowing for metal detection of the upcast spoil of Trenches 2, 3, 4 and 5 only.
The archaeological assessment of the site is now complete. The investigation failed to identify any archaeological features, structures or deposits across the site. Only modern finds were found with the metal detector and have been discarded. No further archaeological work is recommended.
