Previous archaeological evidence suggested that there was medieval activity within the site, identified as a result of test trenching carried out in 2009 (09E0203). The proposed development was revised due to the location of the site within a potential flood area and this allowed the required groundworks to be minimized and for the preservation in situ of material previously exposed. A Conservation Management plan was also submitted and approved.
The monitoring of all groundworks associated with the proposed development was carried out and included monitoring of piling, the ground reduction of the area to accommodate the hardcore, and monitoring during the excavation of all ducting associated with services.
The removed soil consisted of a layer of garden soil (C1), and a layer of a dumped deposit (C3). The layer of dump deposit included concentrations of red brick fragments and midden (consisting of winkles, cockles and mussels), with broken ceramics and glass and stone inclusions mixed throughout. Natural subsoil (C2) was only seen in patches, particularly in the southern portion of the site, and consisted of sand and water-rolled stones and it was exposed at a depth of 0.8m or greater. Ground reductions carried out did not exceed a depth of 0.9m. No features of archaeological significance were exposed during monitoring and no finds were recovered. The work is now complete and no further mitigation is necessary.
