A total of six trenches (Trenches 1-6) were excavated running east-west across the site. An additional small offset (Trench 4a) was excavated at the eastern extent of Trench 4. Each trench measured 1.8m in width with a total of 1122m of linear trenches excavated. The test trenches were excavated to the natural subsoil. A single pit was identified (C3). This was located in Trench 4. The offset Trench 4a was also excavated at this feature.
No additional features of archaeological significance were identified. A boundary ditch was also identified in Trenches 2-5. This feature was visible on the 3rd edition OS Map (1907). No archaeological features or deposits were identified within any of the other excavated trenches. A single sherd of medieval pottery (13th/14th century) was recovered from the topsoil in the eastern extent of Trench 6.
Excavation of an area measuring 10m by 10m was recommended to take place in advance of construction.
