Test Excavations were undertaken at Cookstown, Ardee, Co. Louth in February 2023. It was proposed to excavate 8 trenches measuring 350 linear metres (700 sq. m) within the subject area, a ploughed agricultural field. Trenches were positioned at locations agreed in advance with the NMS. All but one of the trenches were excavated as planned. Trench 8 could not be excavated. Topsoil/plough soil depth varied between 0.25-0.49m. Subsoil was a yellow- orange stoney boulder clay. An east-west aligned modern drain was located in the south of Trench 1.
Nothing of archaeological significance was recorded in any of the trenches.
