Ten test pits were excavated adjacent to a trackway where an underground cable will run; this was monitored by an archaeologist.
Only three of the test pits were excavated to a depth of less than 2m and in those cases were halted due to the presence of a concrete slab, groundwater and bedrock. Two test pits encountered natural subsoil at 1.5m, but were excavated beyond that to a depth of 2m. Four test pits were excavated to a depth of 2m and were still within peat at that level; these were in the northern part of the cable route. One test pit, within a modern compound at the south of the cable route, was excavated to a depth of 2.5m, though this was still within modern backfill.
Nothing of archaeological significance was encountered in any of the test pits.
