Phase 2 works under licence 23E0190 consisted of undergrounding the services along Church Street. Phase 1 works, closer to the centre of Askeaton town, were completed under Consent C001070 and Registration Number (E005360).
The length of the new undergrounding trench work was approximately 120m and the trench was up to 1.2m deep x 1m wide. The trenches were generally located in the footpaths, with road crossings. The footpaths were reinstated with 100mm depth of concrete for the entire scheme. The existing road surface was milled out to a maximum depth of 100mm and replaced with 60mm of binder course and 40mm of wearing course. All ground reduction works were archaeologically monitored.
Examination of historic mapping indicates that this part of the street was largely undeveloped prior to the 19th century.
Nothing of archaeological significance was noted during the course of these excavations.
