Pre-Development Archaeological Monitoring and Excavation in advance of a residential development at Templemichael, Caherconlish, took place between 19 September and 20 October 2023. the excavation was based upon the findings of a small furnace or kiln area identified in 2021 during test excavation work.

From the outset of the excavation it was found the site was layered with up to 0.4m of topsoil to elevate it above a small floodplain that was localised as internal to the site only. It appears that this hid far more extensive medieval archaeology of which the kiln or smithy area was its focal point. Due to continuous water ingress in the site and combined with the extent of the archaeology, the proposed development has been subject to redesign in order to protect as much of the archaeology as practical and with resolution of the remainder that will be subject to development.

The excavation has been temporarily ceased pending approval of or amendment to the revised method statement.
