Archaeological monitoring of groundworks associated with the proposed construction of a poultry house, feed silos, concrete apron, soiled water storage tanks and associated works on a 2.52-hectare greenfield site at Knocknabooly East and Ballynash (Bishop), Foynes, Co. Limerick, was conducted in May 2023.
Monitored works comprised topsoil stripping and excavation along the line of the proposed access road and within the proposed construction area in the northern field. Excavation was carried out by machine, with a 2m-wide bucket. The maximum depth of excavations was c. 0.6m
Excavated material comprised dark-brown stony topsoil with an average depth of 0.2–0.3m. In the southern areas of the site the topsoil overlay a light to mid-gray boulder clay, with frequent rounded stones, occasional small boulders and occasional patches of brown clay. Towards the northwest of the site the boulder clay underlying the topsoil changed from light grey to light brown.
No archaeological finds, features or deposits were identified during the monitored groundworks.
