A programme of archaeological testing of the proposed replacement of a rising main pipeline at Knocklong. Co. Limerick was carried out in June 2023. There is a rath located immediately to the north of the proposed works (LI041-007----). Part of the proposed works will be carried out within the zone of notification for the rath.
The subject site comprises an arable field, which is bound to the south by hedgerow and fencing separating it from the Cork-Dublin rail line, to the north by a watercourse and mature hedgerow to west and east. The rath lies immediately to the north and west of the test trench with the existing subsurface water mains separating the test trench from the rath.
The stratigraphy exposed was a 150-200mm deep layer of a mid-brown sandy topsoil and sod overlying a reddish-brown sandy silty natural undisturbed subsoil.
Nothing of archaeological significance was noted.
