The development works entailed the construction of a residential development consisting of 35 units in the form of three two-storey terraced blocks, creation of new vehicular entrances, associated access roads and parking, landscaping and all necessary and ancillary site works at Tully (Carrigallan By.) & Cannaboe, Ballinamore, Co. Leitrim. The total area encompassed 2.766 acres.
The proposed development is in the south and southwest area of the town centre of Ballinamore. There are several recorded monuments within the vicinity of the proposed development site including LE025-117---- Standing Stone and LE025-118---- Architectural Fragment.
Archaeological monitoring took place over the course of four days at various dates between June 2022 and February 2023, following a request from Leitrim Planning Department for monitoring of all groundworks associated with the development. The first area subject to monitoring was to the southwest of the site where a block of housing was being developed. The second area stripped of topsoil was at the northeast area of the site and the final area was located in the centre of the site. The topsoil covered varied in depth from 0.2–0.45m of silty clay and grass sod. The area where the railway dyke was located was filled with the soil removed from the site. The development area had been stripped previously of overburden and fill was brought to the site to level and raise the ground across the site in preparation for building. Throughout the monitoring of the works involving subsurface works and topsoil stripping no features or deposits of archaeological significance were noted in the development area.
