At the request of Dr Jason Bolton on behalf of Mc Donalds Ireland Ltd, archaeological monitoring was undertaken of the proposed works at Carrick On Shannon. An Bord Pleannála requested archaeological monitoring of ground excavations as part of a planning condition. Monitoring was carried out on 13, 14 and 15 March and 11 April 2023.
The excavations required for removal of Japanese knotweed were monitored. No other excavations were required for construction as the ground is to be built up rather than excavated.
Monitoring revealed that the ground was made-up and previously disturbed in all the trenches excavated. There was modern disturbance evident in all the trenches. This disturbance is likely associated with the road construction and the retail park construction. No further archaeological recommendations.
